Perception. The window of perception.
Yes, perception is what frees one from thinking in the box. Perception is also what enslaves one to think in the box.
Everything starts with perception. Remember the 9 dots exercise showing you how quick you exit the box? It relies on your perception.
Perception is good. It gives you the possibility of survival and prosper. Perception means a statistics approach of your brain versus reality. Perception is sensing+interpreting. Sensing through the 5 senses + interpreting what you sense. Together, they form your perception.
Perception is educated through you entire life, from birth to death. How it is formed and re-shaped triggers a more or a less innovative view of life.
Thus, past experiences are relevant for your current drive towards imagination, creativity and innovation. Present experiences are also valid and the same with the future ones.
Perception should be educated. You may educate it through the input of your will. Will directs perception.
Training your perception is not hard and is linked to its 2 components: sensing and interpreting.
You may learn to sense more or less from reality by blocking or willingly directing your sensing in ways different than before. Try to just pay attention to “hearing” for one day. Try to just be attentive to the smells around for one day.
You may learn to re-interpret your raw sense inputs by re-framing what you see, hear, smell, touch, taste. Try to eat something never eaten before. Try to combine foods never combined before.
Exceptional iconoclasts and innovators are able to suspend their sensing and interpreting constantly, to be curious about reality in novel ways each day. They are not so entrenched in their brain’s statistics of reality.
Through the window of perception: here are 2 ways your business people may get their thinking through the window of perception out of the box or even out of the building where the box is, in a sustainable way:
- Do the exercise of concentration of the senses; a few minutes each day, activate all your 5 senses, wake them up. In a quiet state (without doing anything, without talking to someone else), look around carefully and only list what you see in your mind without trying to remember, listen carefully to the noises and sounds near you and in the surrounding area, smell carefully, follow your body movements, tensed or relaxed spots of your body, breathing or pulse, closely notice your taste. Do all these things alternating attention to one or the other senses. With time you will notice that the state you get from this practice will occur more spontaneously and naturally during the day and will be prolonged. Finally you will fully wake up and the maps and the filters in your mind will blur. You’ll live more fully, more creative, more attentive to the world around, more in line and in tune with nature.
- Try the “other 3 senses” for one day. We are all slaves of the hearing and seeing but much less of the smelling, touching and tasting. For at least one day, concentrate on these 3 senses. They are sources of important information. Use them to decide, choose, and evaluate experiences of this day and put aside the seeing and hearing. You may have a full experience by blocking 4 senses and using only one in a certain known safe space.
